How Do You Report Someone To The Credit Bureau?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Whenever you apply for credit or load, the lenders obtain a copy of your credit file to check if you have a good credit rating. They check your credit score to assess your credit risk. Mostly the lenders check with one or all of the three major credit rating agencies Transunion, Experian and Equifax. You can obtain a copy of your latest credit report from any of these agencies. You can also request free credit reports from annualcredit.com. This means, you do not have to actually report someone to the credit bureau; the information is reported by the lender when you apply for the credit.

If you are talking about 'reporting' someone to the credit bureau for ID theft or suspected fraud, then you have to do the following:
    • Call up the customer care of one of the major credit unions. They will give you a 'fraud victim assistance number' and divert the call to their specialised department. You also get a free credit report if you suspect that the credit file has errors due to fraud.
    • You may go to www.consumer.gov/idtheft.  You can also call the Federal Trade Commission's ID theft Clearinghouse at their toll-free number: 877-438-4338.
    • Report ID theft to the law enforcement agency. Under federal law, you are not financially liable to pay more than $50 if someone uses your credit card without authorization. If you report the problem quickly to the credit bureau and your lender, you may have the charges removed totally too.

I would appreciate more info on how to report a person that has defaulted on their rent, they did not show for court, so for now unless they appeal I have legal documentation of their default. I am out a substantial amount of rent, and their deposit will just cover the repairs that I need to pay someone to do. How can a landlord report a bad credit on a bad tennant. I am not vindictive, but I feel it is a good way to warn other rental unit owners of their rent/bill paying.
