'The Sims' is a strategic life simulation computer game. It was created by game designer Will Wright, published by Maxis and distributed by Electronic Arts.

The game was first released on February 4 2000, and the base game has sold more than 6.3 million copies, making it the best-selling PC game in history, with the franchise selling over 58 million units.

The game focuses on the lives of 'Sims' , and the player takes control of these virtual people, helping them to achieve their daily activities, such as cooking, sleeping, bathing, socializing and so on.

Will Wright is thought to have had the idea for The Sims when his house and possessions were burned down in the 1991Oakland firestorm. Wright moved his family elsewhere and rebuilt his life, which inspired him to create a simulated game about life. The game is also loosely based on SimCity, in which the player must create and manage a city and its citizenry, dubbed 'Sims'.

In the game, the player starts off by getting their Sim a job, then helping their Sim to make friends, get married and eventually have children. The player must also help their Sim to work their way up in their career, eventually ending in the highest promotion.

Sims must have their needs fulfilled, such as having fun. If their fun bar gets low, then a Sim will eventually become depressed, affecting their performance at work and causing them to be nasty to other Sims by insulting them, slapping them or attacking them. Sims must go to work to pay bills.

The Sims has a very advanced architecture system, and the player can decorate the house in which their Sim lives in. They can choose from a variety of wallpaper, carpets, and lots of other objects. The Sims has unlimited replay value, which means that there is no way to win the game.

Although a Sim can perform actions alone, they need to be controlled by the player to perform other tasks, such as paying the bills. Abandoning this task could lead to overdue bills, and a Sim will end up having their property repossessed.

Sims speak a fictional language, called Simlish (sometimes called 'Simish').
