There are a number of things that can go wrong with your air conditioner. But it is not necessary that all the problems are of a serious nature. A window air conditioner works on gas that is contained within its compressor, much like a refrigerator. It also has a fan and a filtration system. If the gas has leaked or if the fan is not working, you will then need to call in a professional. However, if the filters are clogged up with dust you will be able to clean this yourself. Air condition suppliers usually sign a servicing agreement with customers, whereby they send a cleaning crew once in a while to clean the filters thoroughly. You will need a vacuum cleaner, a bucket of water and a rag or a mop to do it yourself, and the assistance of at least one more person, because window Air Conditioners can be heavy. Remove the front grill or panel next to the vent and knobs. This is usually screwed into place. Now remove the filtering foam as well. Unplug the unit from the power supply. Slide the unit half way out. Wash the front panel and foam (you can also replace the foam), vacuum the interiors thoroughly and use a wet rag to wipe the fan blades etc. After the grill and foam are dry, put them back into place and push the unit back into place.
