What Names And Titles Was Shakespeare Known By?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

William Shakespeare's name was William Shakespeare. However, because of no absolute spellings being in existence at the time of Queen Elizabeth, his name was also spelt or written as Shakspere, Shaxper, Shake-speare and Shaksper. In fact, on the popular series Mind Your Language, Ranjit Singh, the Indian student, also refers to him as William Spear Shaikh (A very sub-continental version).

William Shakespeare was also referred to and still is by a number of titles. He is referred to as the bard, or the bard of Avon, the Swan of Avon, England's national poet, and a host of other complimentary compliments.

Shakespeare has become a type of national icon or symbol of not just the English people but also of the English language. No other person in the history of the English language has influenced it as much as William Shakespeare.
