Where Does Word Raffia Come From?

    The word "Raffia" is taken from the Malagasy word "raffia". The word raffia is the name of an African palm tree whose characteristics include large leaves that are known for their high fibre yield. The fibres of this plant are known as raffia as well, they are typically used for making baskets, mats and other related products.

    The palms that make up the Genus Raffia palms scientifically classified as the Genus "Raphia" number around twenty species. The Genus is classified under the Family of "Arecaceae", of the Order "Arecales", in the Class of "Liliopsida", from the Division of "Magnoliophyta" within the Kingdom "Plantae".     

    The Raffia plant is a native of the tropical parts of the Dark Continent. It is found as well in Madagascar. One known species is also found in South and Central America.
