It shouldn't really matter - as long as you put time and effort into your application and show that you are really interested, it shouldn't matter if it's online or on paper

As an owner of three businesses, I would much rather interview a person in person for a job. It is better to see up front how people handle themselves, if they dress nice or sloppy. You can hear their talk, and see so much from body language.
If a person in on time for an interview that says a lot. If they appear to be lazy or energetic is important.
From an application you cannot get answers to questions that you might have forgotten to ask. You could have written applications then sort them out, but never hire without first having a long personal talk or two with a person.
