In 1897 a great hoard of 16 000 Roman coins was uncovered at Carrawburgh in Northumberland, near to Hadrian's wall. They originated from between AD 100 and AD 300 and had been thrown into a well as offerings to a water nymph called Corentina. Other large hoards have also been found.

Most were denarii, silver coins that were first minted in 269 BC and that continued to be used throughout the Roman empire and until the end of the Roman Republic in AD 476.

A recent hoard to be discovered was found in 2001 in London. 43 22 carat gold coins were found in that hoard and all were in perfect condition. They date from the AD 65 during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero to AD 174, when the Roman Emperor was Aurelius. These coins are now in the Museum of London.
