A professional actor is someone who makes their living by being an actor. Professionalism, the attitude and behaviour of a profession is important but essentially if one is a professional, that should be assumed as part of the practise. Instead, one must be able to feed, clothe and house you and yours through this type of work alone, or at least bring in your half of a salary.

Professionalism such as knowing your trade, turning up on time, working hard, being committed to the profession, not bringing the profession into disrepute, being reliable and well trained. This is the mark of a professional, but it is the same as being a professional.

Amateurism on the other side, means doing something for love, and although this is often considered 'lower' than the professional, for many years, Amateurs were considered a higher class of actor because they did not need to earn a living doing it.
