The word scrimping is the present continuous tense form of the verb to scrimp. The word scrimping is defined as economising severely. It also refers to the act of being miserly or stingy or being excessively sparing with or of. It is also defined as the act of cutting or making (something) too small or scanty. To scrimp also means to subsist on a meagre allowance. To scratch and scrimp, to stint, to skimp and to save, which actually means to spend less or buy (something) at a reduced price, are words which are similar in meaning to the verb to scrimp.

The other forms of the verb to scrimp are scrimped (the past tense form of the verb to scrimp), scrimps (which is in the continuous form). The verb scrimp is believed to have been derived from a word which originated in the Scandinavian region of Europe. This word is similar to the Swedish word skrympa, which means to shrink.
