Berlin's Tempelhof International Airport is scheduled to close in October 2008, due to the construction of the Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which will eventually replace the three international hubs presently in operation.
Tempelhof's current terminal was opened in 1941and the building is an example of Nazi era architecture. Tempelhof's terminal was sometimes described as the "mother of all airports," due to its massive size and imposing halls. Designed by Ernst Sagebiel, Tempelhof's new terminal was once the largest building in the world.
Tempelhof has been seen as a very practical airport by many travellers over the years, due to its proximity to central Berlin. Some even refer to it as the "City Airport," as it takes only about 15 minutes to reach downtown Berlin with public transit.
In 2006 Tempelhof was served by SN Brussels Airlines, Sterling Airlines, Cirrus Airlines, InterSky and European Air Express. The majority of flights serve short-haul, regional destinations.
