South Africa, appropriately known as 'The Rainbow Nation', has a total of nine provinces.  The nine provinces are Eastern Cape, Free State, Guateng, KwaZuluNatal, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Limpopo, North West Province and Western Cape.  Between the years 1910 up until 1994 during the apartheid years, South Africa was only divided into four provinces.  These four provinces being the Cape Province, the Transvaal, Natal and Orange Free State.  During these years, an additonal ten 'homelands' were created for the black population of the country.  Bophuthatswans, Ciskei, Transkei, Venda, Gazankulu, KaNgwane, KwaZulu, Lebowa and Qwaqwa.  These ten former South African homelands, used to divide black from white, ceased to exist on 27 April 1994 and have all been reincoporated into South Africa as a country.     The year 1994 also saw the end of the Apartheid years and the very first free multiracial elections were held.  Nelson Mandela triupmhantly won the elections.
