I would have to say that it is most definitely true.  We often look up to our teachers so they may influence us, but our parents are the ones who have the most contact with us.  We see how they behave, and hopefully, we hear what they tell us.  Most of us look up to our parents and want to be like them.  We see how they treat others including each other and us.  Did they keep the money when they got too much change?  Did they help someone with a flat tire or give a lift to a neighbor who's car was in the shop.  Did they stiff the waiter or cheat on their taxes?   Did they comfort someone in pain or walk away because it's not their problem?  Kids learn from what they see and hear, and most of that happens at home.  By the time they go out on their own, their values are pretty much set.
