Most likely, alcohol is processed differently, person to person. Some people get rid of it quickly, and in others they can feel the effects of it for a couple of days. It all depends on the metabolism and the physique of a person.
When you are processed through the 'drunk tank' at the police station, they have to keep you for at least 8 hours, which they say is enough time for you to sober up. So, I guess it would depend on how much you drink and the duration in which you are in the drunken stupor. Hope this helps.
