The weight gain could be down to a number of things so you really shouldn't think that it is your fault. You are doing everything right and there is nothing else you could possibly do. It is thought that whilst most women do not put weight on after they have given birth, there is a small minority that do and one of the reasons could be inherited. It is thought that if a woman has an overweight mother, they are more likely to put weight on after giving birth.
However, that is unlikely to be the cause of your weight gain and it more likely could be your breast milk. Breast milk does add on a few pounds and that could be why you seem to have put weight on. It could also be fluid retention depending on exactly what time of month you weigh yourself. It is possible that you might not be eating the right foods, and in that case, even if you only have a few mouthfuls, a hi-cal food can still make you gain weight. If you are still unsure as to what is causing your weight gain and if it continues, it is important to consult your doctor and they should be able to give you a proper diagnosis.

I do understand how you feel; most of us women go through this cycle of weight loss and weight gain in relation to pregnancy and childbirth. Do not worry or lose heart, your hormones may be causing your weight gain. Consult your doctor for further advice on how to go about ruling out medical causes, like for example pregnancy thyroid, or pregnancy related diabetes, for your weight gain.
Once these causes have been rules out and eliminated, sit up and take a good hard look at the number of calories that you have been consuming since you gave birth. In general, lactating mothers do tend to feel hungrier than others, and you may be inadvertently eating more than you should. If so, try to cut down on your calories, and eat more nutritionally beneficial food instead. Keep exercising, and never lose hope.
