How Did Barbaro Break His Leg?

Barbaro is an American thorough bred race horse. He won the Kentucky Derby of 2006. This horse injured his leg on twentieth day of May in 2006. He started through the gate prematurely and he used his nose to unlock the locked gate bars. He could not even complete the race because he met with mishap just after the commencement of the race. His right hind leg was injured and suffered a fracture of three bones in the ankle and around the joints of ankle. It is not known whether the false start resulted into the injury.

The jockey, Edgar Prado stopped him gently as Barbaro was in distress during the race.
He was operated the very next day at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania. The initial reports were favourable. In the early July of 2006, he developed infection in the right hind leg. The other leg also developed laminitis and was an acute infection. The laminitic hoof was surgically removed.
