Poas is a stratovolcano, located in the Central American country of Costa Rica. It contains several eroded calderas, cone, and two crater lakes near its summit. It's highest summit is 2,708 meters, or 8,884 feet. It has erupted 40 times since 1828; however, most of its erutions are phreatic, which means that they were caused by an interaction of water and lava in its crater lakes. The last known erution took place in 1996. There are three craters at Poas. This volcano is located in Poas National Park and is open for public viewing. It is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest where hundreds of animals live and dwell. It is the most visited volcano in Costa Rica because it is only a short drive of forty-seven kilomoeters from the capital city of San Jose. The drive, as well as the park is very pleasant and scenic.
