Melamine is a polymer resin produced from urea. When combined with formaldehyde it produces a tough heat-resistant plastic. It has a higher melting point than ordinary plastics and is also tougher against abrasions (is scratch resistant).
Melmine is commonly used to make relatively non-breakable plates that can withstand some heating (from the food). A lot of camping gear is made from Melamine, not least because melamine mugs can hold very hot liquids without melting.
Melamine also is the main component of formica and arborite.
Melamine plates can usually be put in a dishwasher, as long as they are on the top shelf, away from the hottest jets. Otherwise they may warp or at the very least patterns printed on them will fade or chip. Microwaving melamine plates is a no-no, though. You will find that the plate gets hot and the food stays cold! And don't even think about warming these plates in the oven before a meal.
