What Does Rio Grande Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Rio Grande may be used to refer to the river Rio Grande, or to numerous different things and places. Río Grande means "Big River" in Spanish, while Río Grande del Norte translates as "Great Northern River" (it literally means "Great River of the North"). As the word 'río' stands for "river" in Spanish, using the expression "Rio Grande River" becomes redundant.

This river; located in Mexico ranks third in the longest river systems to be found in the United States.

There are a large number of cities and political divisions by that name such as Rio Grande, Jujuy in Argentina; Rio Grande, Potosí in Bolivia; Rio Grande, and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
