I don't know how the system is set up in the UK, but I know in the US, even before my sister knew what she wanted to get her degree in after she had what equaled to an associates degree, she could substitute for teachers who called in or went on vacation. I am happy to say that she did decide to teach, got her  bachelor's degree and master's and is now going after her Phd.  She still teaches and loves it.

In the UK teaching assistants usually take an NVQ course, lasting around two years, most of which is done on placement in schools. Can i just say though, you are very highly qualified for an assistant's job and with your degree you could probably do a PGCE course in one year and become an actual teacher. Secondary schools are crying out for science teachers.
