Nobody seems to know exactly why they do it, but raccoons are known to douse their food with water before eating it. Studies have concluded they the animals don't do it to clean their food, because they go through the motions even when there is no water around.

Macaque monkeys and raccoons both are known to wash there food when clean water is available.
