A birth plan is a list of directions that explains your preferences for your labor, birth and the delivery of the child. A birth plan serves as a means of communication to all those who care for you to understand what is most desirable for you at the time of giving birth to your child. You should consider discussing your birth plan with a physician around the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy.
A Birth Plan should include the following points:
1. A brief introduction of yourself (your name and contact information etc.)
2. Your earlier birth experiences. Here, you need to mention your concerns and things like, what you liked or disliked. Or if there is any procedure that you are scared of.
3. Your choice of the place. Will it be a hospital, birth centre or your home?
4. Mention your pain relief preferences, birthing positions etc.
5. The people that you want to be near you at the time of delivery of the child.
6. Expectations you have from the support people and their roles.
7. Your post natal care details. Your decisions on how the baby should be fed and that the baby stays with the mother all the time etc.
