You need an account that has an Xbox Live subscription, Gold enables Online play whilst Silver only lets you download content from the Marketplace etc. To get a subscription, click on join Xbox Live whilst on the home screen, you will need an internet connection to connect to the internet, I advise you use broadband for online play.
