Do Successful Films Always Have Happy Endings?

Not all successful films have happy endings. Apocalypse Now and the more recent American Beauty certainly do not qualify as films that end happily yet they received good reviews and were seen by many people. Modern film industry specialist do argue that cinema goers in particular are keen on happy endings. So while a happy ending is not essential in order for a film t get made and distributed to cinemas it might be the key to making money. Many critically acclaimed films make little or no money from box office or DVD sales given the huge cost of making them. It has been said that a US studio boss predicted that Four Weddings and a Funeral would be a huge moneymaking film because everyone came out of the first screening with smiles on their faces. The basic rule is that films with happy endings appeal to the widest possible audience but that all audiences want a satisfying ending which ldoes not leave too mnay loose ends or unanswered questions.
