Now, you don't say if you mean ICE-SKATING or INLINE-skating. Both sports are fantastic and as an enthusiast, I can give tips on both.  Come back if you mean ICE SKATING!
INLINE SKATING: when starting- ALWAYS  wear the full safety-gear. Once you feel advanced and sure enough, you can let go of the knee-caps and elbow-caps, but NEVER EVER leave your hand-protection at home, no matter HOW advanced you feel. If you're doing it for fitness, it's the best way to lose fat because few sports allow you to burn so many calories in so short a time! And it's so much fun!! Listen to your favourite music on your MP3-player while you go, choose a run which is easy for starters = along a river, in a park- and choose a time where there's few people  around (specially no families with children or dogs, since the latter are a hazard- as you cannot calculate how they react + where they are going on your approach. Be aware that your way of breaking is a long one- better to EVADE an object /subject than trying to brake!  Scout your way - ahead of racing it along (on foot or bike)! What obstacles are there? Check online skater-forums for best routes in your vicinity! Team up with old-hands to show you all the tricks!  Skating is a fantastic sport - alone or in a team - !!!
