She is a new mom and only had one. Could this one have something wrong with it and thats why? Ive never had this happen before and Ive hatched about 20 chicks in the past two years. Thank you for answering.

Your hen house or pen is probably to crowded. You need to have 4-7 feet PER chicken. If you do not have that much space, you need to thin your flock.

That is a good question. I had one Australorp hen who started killing her chicks the minute they started coming out of the eggs. I thought well maybe that was just a fluke, and tried to set her again, but she did the same thing. The best thing I can say is don't let her ever set again, unless you can take the eggs out from under her the day of hatching and raise them yourself. I did with my hens eggs. I was lucky I had another hen who hatched some chicks at the same time and I fooled her into taking the others too. She had fifteen chicks to take care of and did a wonderful  job!

My Australorp is trying to set again. This is the third time since spring. I don't want any late chicks so I just keep putting her off the nest and today I actually took her out of the pen and am letting her run in the yard. If she tries to set next spring, I won't let her. With two hatchings under her belt and both times she started killing them I am not letting her set again. Good luck with your baby.

Oh I forgot, I read once that if a hen feels like the chicks are being threatened, they will kill them to keep them from being hurt by whatever she thinks is threatening them.
