Who Wrote The First Five Books Of The Bible?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The authorship of the first five books of the Bible, also called the Pentateuch and the Books of the Law, is long and complex.

A simple summary would be that people who hold to the Inerrancy of the Bible would say that Moses wrote all five books. This is seen in the books themselves when it is said that Moses wrote the law down (Ex. 24:4, Deut. 31:9). The rest of the Old Testament also speaks of the Law as written down by Moses (Josh. 8:31, 2 Chron. 34:14). Jesus himself refers to the pentateuch as being the words of Moses (Mark 7:10). If you believe the Bible is without error then you would have to say that Moses wrote it.

The other main theory is called the Documentary Hypothesis. This suggests that the Pentateuch is actually an edited document taken from four principle sources and redacted at a much later date. The argument here states that since there are many places where stories are repeated in a slightly different way, either once or twice, and also that there are minor discrepancies in the accounts, there must be several sources.

Although Moses is said to be the original author, there are events that Moses could not have known. The Bible was redacted during Isaiah's time, probably after the Babylonian captivity began. It was redacted again when translated into Greek during the Greek occupation, and all former versions burned. The original writings of Moses no longer exist. We can not be sure that Moses wrote in a language similar to the Hebrew of the time. The most ancient version of the Pentateuch are the fragments from the Dead Sea scrolls, which are usually dated in the first century AD. They may have been buried to protect them from being burned by one of the Roman Emperors, possibly Nero. Although Constantine also gathered, re-wrote, and burned the scriptures of his time, the Pentateuch was probably not affected.
