Butterflies eat nectar. You can make some yourself with granulated sugar and water to attract them. This helps feed bees as well. Put out some very ripe fruit too - butterflies love it!
Tip - If you get a lot of white cabbage butterflies and your family are growing greens deny all knowledge lol. Mine fella is for ever chasing them off lol.
