Migration has been part and parcel of human existence. First it was taken on under the garb of 'for the availability of food and basics' then 'for work and to be a part of the Industrial Revolution' and now simply, 'to improve upon the existent quality of life'. Nevertheless, it has brought about good and bad in its wake, just like every other human activity.

The rural and urban cultures worldwide may differ a bit, but remain similar in many ways too. The kind of opportunities available to the urban populations cannot even be compared to those available in the rural areas that are mostly agrarian in nature.

When an individual migrates from a rural area to an urban city, it is first and foremost a culture shock. The close-knit society that exists in the rural surroundings is lost and the person finds himself, 'exposed and very vulnerable'. He has to embark upon the mammoth task of finding company and friendship. The expenses go without a mention, which include that of being accommodated, food and transport.

At whatever age the migration takes place, the person has to deal with initial alienation and non-acceptance. This is one of the reasons why the move should be made when young. The initial loneliness and need for suitable employment do result in slowly becoming part of a society, but the healthiness of the outcome varies with experience. It pays to conduct a little prior research and if possible, identify someone in the urban setting, who can be doted on.
