What Does Chancellor Mean?

The word Chancellor comes from the Latin word "cancellarius" and originally was a name given to the ushers in the Roman law courts. They sat behind "cancelli" or a lattice in between the counsel and the judges. It later came to adapt the role of a title given to administrators of various capacities holding office in various nations that share their civilisation's history with that of the Roman Empire in some way.

Chancellor can mean a lot of things in a lot of different countries. In Germany and Austria the head of the Government is the chancellor, in Malaysia representing University professors are given the title, in Sweden and France the chancellor has a more judicial role to play etc.

The most famous chancellor was perhaps Otto Van Bismarck of Germany also known as the "Iron Chancellor" and the most notorious was undoubtedly Adolph Hitler.
