Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The New York Dolls are an American rock band formed in the early seventies who were well known for their attire as much as their music. The New York Dolls so named because of their dress sense which featured cross-dressing a novel concept in the US then are considered to be the predecessors of the punk music craze that was to dominate much of the seventies. The Dolls were brought in the limelight by British impresario Malcolm McLaren who was the brain behind the Doll's wardrobe.

The original line up of the New York Dolls included David Johansen (vocals), Johnny Thunders (guitar), Rick Rivets (guitar), Arthur Kane (bass) and Billy Murcia (drums); Sylvain Sylvain replaced Rivets within a few months of the band's formation. Billy Murcia who tragically died of a drug overdose was succeeded by Jerry Nolan as the band's drummer.

The Dolls split in 1977 with the band members going their separate ways; the Dolls again came in to existence in 2004 with David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, Steve Conte, Sami Yaffa, Brian Delaney and Brian Koonin being the present members.
