    Should I Do What My Family Wants, Wait To Put My Dog Down Another Couple Days?

    My dog started drinking a lot of water about 4 days ago then quit eating. He got very lazy and no interest in doing anything. He is a 10 year old Beagle. I put him on antibiotics (dog) and sub Q (water under skin) as he is hydrated, feed him out of syringe. I woke up this morning and he is sneezing blood out his right side of nose. The Vet said it would run about 500.00 and I don't have. I am with him helping him every 1/2 hour 24 hours a day.

    I guess the question is: Is he in pain? If he is, I think it would be best to put him down immediately. If he isn't in pain, you could hold on for a couple- I hope this doesn't sound corny, but talk to him, tell him how much he means to you, tell him memories you remember. If your voice is calm and reassuring, it reflects to him. Give him chicken gravy or soft snacks. Let him sit on the leather sofa when he was never supposed to. I'm so sorry you have to go through this.

      I am sorry about your friend. I had a golden retriever for 12 years until she got very sick two years ago. The vets said they couldn't do a lot for her anymore and she kept getting worse, to the point of not being able to get up to go out to the bathroom by herself , and not being very interested in eating. I have always believed that God is the only one who should decide when someone or something leaves this earth, but as I watched her get worse and suffering I realized that he entrusts us with that power as well for a good reason. I put her down Dec 19th 2005. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Don't let anyone make that decision for you because it's as big for you as it is for your friend. Listen to your heart and it will tell you what to do next , I promise. Good luck
