The Eastern Afromontane is a vast African biodiversity hotspot. It is the natural habitat for a wide variety of flowering plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes and invertebrates. The Eastern Arc Mountains, the Southern Rift, the Albertine Rift, the Kinhasi Falls and the Udzunga and Ukagaru mountain ranges are the six well-known geographical features of this area. The Nectophrynoides asperginis (Kinhasi spray toad) is a variety of Ethiopian toad that lives in a two-hectare spray zone of the Kinhasi Falls region. The Churamiti maridadi is a brightly-coloured tree toad that has been discovered in the Ukagaru Mountains. The Albertine Rift is home to the Laurentophryne parkeri, which is known in common parlance as Parker’s tree toad. Some of the other well-known species of Ethiopian toads, which live in the hotspot, are Malcolm’s Ethiopian toad and Osgood’s Ethiopian toad.
