Where Were The First Traffic Lights?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A traffic light is also called as traffic signal, stop light or stop and go lights. It is a signalling device to indicate to vehicles when to drive or stop and to pedestrians when to walk. It is positioned at a road intersection or pedestrian crossing. It also uses a precise sequence for the colour- blind people. It controls the traffic movement.

The traffic lights idea originated in London and it was railway engineer J. P. Knight who on 10 December 1868 installed the first traffic lights outside the British Houses of Parliament. The gas lamps or lanterns were used for these traffic lights.

However the first electric traffic lights are an American invention, installed in 1920 in Detroit, USA.
The traffic lights as we know them today in their fully automatic mode were first installed in Wolverhampton, England. Then they were introduced in Toronto, Ontario in Canada in 1950.
