During the first four-year term of United States President Andrew Johnson, the year 1830 marked a law passed by the Congress that was called the Indian Removal Act. Acting on this law, the Native Americans were forced to leave their lands and head towards the west across the stretch of the Mississippi river. This law left many people homeless and hungry and deserted and a whole decade and even more than that was spent in misery and suffering by the helpless Native Americans. During the entire decade of the 1930's and some of the years of the 1940's, the United States Army played its feral role in removing the Native Americans from their lands by the use of force.
These Native Americans belonged to several nations such as the Creek, the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole and also Chickasaw. This fierce and despicable treatment on behalf of the American soldiers led to the death of many Native Americans, who also suffered from hunger, diseases and the severity of the weather. Pertaining to these miseries, this trip to the west is often referred to as 'Trail of Tears.'
