    The Linux operating system belongs to the category of free and open source software. The under lying source code of Linux operating system is available freely to users so that they can alter and redistribute the software. Interoperability can be defined as the ability to interchange and use information it usually happens in a large heterogeneous network made up and built of various local area networks (LAN). Linux gives an advantage of interoperability with other operating systems like MS Windows. It provides interoperability with other software which can even be non-Linux software. Linux is very convenient operating system as it interacts very nicely and efficiently with the computers having non-Linux operating system. Interoperability also offers a facility of providing a free choice of software and data formats to the users.

    Linux falls in the category of portable operating systems. This means that Linux has an ability to execute or run on a diverse range of computer architectures. It is applied and used as an operating system for a broader diversity or variety of the computer hardware than any other operating system letting in or including the super computers, the desktop computers, mainframes and even embedded devices. Preponderantly Linux is famous for its use in servers.
