Answer Question

Finny doesn't want to show the other students and faculty at Devon him breaking a record because he wants to show Gene that he can do it.  He doesn't feel as if he needs to show the others that he can do it.  He mainly wants to impress Gene so Gene stays his friend.

'A Separate Peace' is the name of a book written by John Knowles in the year 1959. It is set against the backdrop of the Second World War in a fictional Devon School in New Hampshire.

The book basically portrays human emotional states such as hatred, revenge and guilt. Interestingly, the author has left the novel completely open to the reader's interpretation. The book has received many awards and accolades. It has also been adapted as a screenplay for a movie.

Finny is the character who is Gene's best friend. The author has portrayed Finny to be this outgoing, honest and endearing person who has a pure heart. He lacks qualities like pride and egotism; hence he did not want everyone to know about his swimming feat.
