What Would Cause My Ten Year Old Cat To Suddenly Start Pooping Outside Of Her Litter Box Occasionally?

My ten year old female cat has started pooping outside of her litter box. She doesn't do it consistently and always right outside of the box?

My cat (8 yr) does that when the pan needs to be cleaned, not just a change of the litter. I mean a good wash and dry of the box and the area around the pan.

Either your litter box needs to be changed or your cat is telling you it has a medical problem. Cats do not like odors. Also it may be starting to have an aversion to the litter you are using. Cats do not like smelly deodorized litter. Meaning, they do not like litter with a lot of scent, pine is the worst. Dr. Esley's Precious Cat is what I use and have had no problems.

An otherwise fastidious cat who is having uncomfortable stools will sometimes develop an aversion to the litter box if they begin to associate getting in the box with pain/getting out of the box with pain ending.
