It's horses for courses. Cheap car insurance is packaged to do a particular job. So long as that is acknowledged and the fine print examined, the cheapest car insurance quote may well be the bargain you think it is.

Of course, the concept of value for money is a subjective one. And is difficult to generalise about without knowing an individual's personal circumstances and needs.

As a rule of thumb, cheap car insurance companies will probably be best if you drive around in an old banger bought at auction for £500 or less. It may not be such great value if your vehicle is much newer and you want all the extra benefit of things like a courtesy car and higher levels of customer care and assistance.

For people who simply don't like spending money on insurance or are on a tight budget, the cheapest car insurance quote may be a matter of principle or fiscal prudence. The danger of using cheapest as a benchmark is that it may be more expensive in the long run. Does the policy do all the things you need it to do?
