The first penalty shoot out to be held in the FA cup was in nineteen seventy two.

Back then the FA cup still held a third place play off game, a match at the start of the nineteen seventy two, seventy three season was delayed until the eve of the new season.

In the third place play off for the FA cup tournament held the season before, the third placed play off was contested between Stoke City and Birmingham City and was held at St Andrews the home of the Birmingham club.

The match played on August fifth, finished nil all after extra time and Birmingham City won the resulting and first ever penalty shoot out held in the FA cup by four penalties to three.

The shoot out it self was held in the format typical to todays, with each team taking five kicks each and if scores are level after wards, sudden death decides the outcome.
