    The word Nifty is a combination of two words namely the "N" from national and "ifty" from fifty. It is an index of fifty companies listed on the National Stock Exchange in India. The fifty companies cover twenty two different sectors of the Indian economy. The Sensex on the other hand refers to the sensitivity Index of the Bombay Stock Exchange. The Sensex comprises of the traded stock of the thirty most traded and active types. It is also representative and covers various sectors. The stock of the Nifty companies' accounts for approximately sixty percent of the stock traded at the National stock exchange, the Sensex stock accounts for nearly twenty percent of the capitalization of the Bombay Stock Exchange.

    The Sensex suffered its worse performance on the 22nd of May 2006 when it plunged by around one thousand one hundred points.
