What Is The Law Of Maintenance People Going Into An Apartment Without Notice Or Permission?

I recently moved into a new apartment and was asked to fill out a inspection list. I gave the list back and within a few days the maintenance guy had unlocked my apartment and came in. I was not home, but my fiancee was. Illinois laws.

I'm not sure about Illinois laws but I have years of experience in other states with property management. Once you turn in a inspection list you are requesting that those things be taken care of.  They have in writing a request from you to do so. Many companies will call and schedule a time but are not required to. If you ask them not to enter your apt. Without notice most companies will honor that request. If they don't have that request then they will assume you have asked for the work to be done by filling out the form.

There was nothing on the inspection list that needed to be fixed. There was no reason that they needed to come into the apartment. The only things I commented on was the horrible patch job and the blinds. I did make sure to take pictures of everything before I moved my stuff in.

It's usually detailed in your lease or rental agreement.  In some states they can come in anytime without permission or notice IF they suspect or believe there is a situation that could cause possible property damage....otherwise they should give you written notice 24 hours in advance of their intended entry.
