The Spanish football club, Real Madrid, was founded in 1902.
From 1895, some Oxbridge graduates who were studying at the Institucion Libre de Ensenanza, decided to form a football team, as football was already so popular in England. Their initial football club was named 'Football Sky', but this later split to become 'New Foot-Ball de Madrid' and 'Club Espanol de Madrid'.
Club Espanol de Madrid split a further time in 1902, to become 'Sociedad Madrid FC' which later became the Real Madrid club that we know today.

Real Madrid enjoys massive success in the highest football division in Spain, La Liga. In the 2005/06 season, the team finished in second place, behind rivals FC Barcelona.

Real Madrid play their home games at the ground of Santiago Bernabeu, in Madrid. The stadium has a current capacity for just over 80,000 spectators.

The club holds the record for the most European Champion trophies, which is 9, and also the most La Liga Champion trophies, which is 29.
