    There were new forms of entertainment such as the radio, crosswords, cinema, dancing and the phonograph. The new prosperity meant people had more money to spend on consumer durables and entertainment.
    The cheap car meant more mobility and freedom. By 1929, one car for every 4.5 persons. Sport also became popular with increased time for leisure. The cinema was the most popular form of entertainment with 90 million tickets sold every week People went two to three times a week. Popular silent movies included Charlie Chaplain, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy. Start of star system. People went to cinema to copy their fashions. In 1928 the first 'talkies' (films with speech) were made. The first one was the 'Jazz Singer' starring Al Jolson. People also went to cinemas to see the newsreels. Drinking at speakeasies was a common pastime for many Americans, despite alcohol consumption being illegal at the time.
