The biggest island in the world is Greenland. It's in the North Atlantic between north America and Europe. Greenland measures 2.166 million square kilometres.

In turn, the smallest continent is Australia, with an area of approximately 7.6 million square km. The only real difference between a continent and an island is their respective sizes. The gap from that biggest island to the smallest continent is a factor of more than 3 -- quite a bit, really. Although the gap from Greenland down to the next largest island is of the same magnitude.

In descending order, the nine largest islands in the world (after Greenland) are:

New Guinea: 808,510 sq km (35% the size of Greenland)
    Borneo: 751,100 sq km
    Madagascar: 587,041 sq km
    Baffin Island 507,451 sq km
    Sumatra 473,605 sq km
    Honshū: 230,455 sq km
Great Britain: 229,870 sq km (a tenth the size of Greenland)
    Victoria Island: 217,291 sq km
    Ellesmere Island: 196,236 sq km
