It sounds more like a particulate matter (speck of dust) in the back of just the one eye. Gently rinsing your eyes with tap water may help wash it out. See medical advice if that doesn't work.

And otherwise...Take over-the-counter painkillers, make an appointment with your GP (doctor). Phone up the optician, and then NHS-Direct (or another telephone medical advice service, if outside the UK). Ask the optician exactly what they sprayed in, and then tell NHS-Direct. Go to a NHS Walk-in centre (or other clinic) if you don't wait to see a GP; go to A & E (Emergency Room) if you're in agony.

Can't say for sure that what the optician squirted in has caused the problem, it could easily be coincidence.

The thing is, you say that only one eye is aching. If it was one of the regular ingredients in the fluid that caused the problem, then both eyes should be irritated. And the irritation should have happened immediately, while you were still in the examination.

It's possible that there was some kind of small contamination in the fluid -- something got in one eye and not the other. But it's odd that the ache should be in the back of your eye; usually the tears of our eyes manage to push out contaminants, at least to the front of the eye.
