Baseball is a bat and ball sport with two teams, each of which has nine players. The pitcher pitches the leather ball towards the other team. The batter tries to hit the ball with a bat.
The game is played on a diamond, which is ninety feet in length.
One team scores when it gets a player around the diamond. There is no length of play with regards to time, there are instead nine innings. Once three players are out, their team's segment of the inning is over.
The game itself derives from the old game of rounders (still played in the UK). Semi-professional baseball began officially in 1860.
One of the most amusing issues relating to baseball is the so-called World Series, a competition that does not involve any other countries apart from America. Perhaps it reflects America's attitude to their place in the world.
