The process of coaching is designed to help people to learn rather than to provide them with facts or a great deal of information. Coaching is simply a very one sided conversation. It is the coach's job to listen and reflect back key points to the client in order to help them focus on how they will bring about change. The purpose of coaching is to get clients to set and achieve goals of their own choice. The key to gaining successful outcomes from coaching is the quality of the relationship between the coach and the client. Coaching works by encouraging and enabling the client to take responsibility for their learning and achievements. For this to happen the coach must build a good rapport and trust with the client. Coaches use simple techniques to help the client become and stay motivated to achieve their goals. These might be exercises to be carried out between coaching sessions or encouraging the client to change their thought patterns. For example, by repeating positive phrases about themselves to displace negative beliefs.
