Try burying different things - a food product, a piece of paper, a Styrofoam cup. Dig them up a month later and check the different rates of decomposition - the Styrofoam won't have changed at all.

Build a composte pile complete with worms and again look at the decomposition. Do it in the fall and in the spring use the composte to fertilize a new plant.

I would suggest looking in Girl Scout Handbooks for ideas ( in badge directions). Try the Boston Globe as well. I seem to remember them having done a whole mini paper on responsible farming that they gave out at a flower show years ago. Google Green earth and companies that specialize in making green projects. Also ask sanctuaries, 4H clubs, Indian tribes (They believe they are the guardians of this world for their gods. It is a gift to be honoured and respected.) Once you start I'm sure you will find tons of info. Good luck! Have fun!
