    The Maldives is a republic in the northern Indian Ocean. The Maldives consists of a chain of 1,190 small coral islands that are grouped together to form a clusters of atolls. It has a total area of just 298 sq km.  Male with a population of 84000 people according to the 2001 census is the capital and largest city of the Maldives.
    These islands are low-lying and coconut palms and breadfruit trees are found in abundance in these islands. The Maldives has a humid and tropical climate with average annual temperature around 26.7 degrees Celsius. The average annual rainfall is 1,500 mm.
    According to the 2004 estimates, the population of the Maldives is 339,330. Male, the capital; Suvadiva and Tiladummat are the most populous atolls. The population comprises people from Indian, Sinhalese, Arabian, and African origin.
    The Maldivian economy is dominated by fishing and industrial activity is largely confined to fish processing and garment manufacturing. The tourist industry is growing at fast pace and tourism contributes significantly to the country's foreign exchange.
    The Maldives first constitution was drafted in 1968 which was replaced by a new one in 1998.
    The president enjoys executive power and serves a five-year term. The country has a unicameral legislature called Majalis.
