At the outset, it is important to understand that COPD is not a disease in itself. It is a term used to categorize a group of lung-related diseases. COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and is also referred to as Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease (COAD). A number of lung-related diseases come under this category – bronchitis, emphysema, asbestosis, and pneumoconiosis. COPD is usually seen to affect smokers, and also people living in polluted environments. The most important characteristic of COPD is the reduced flow of air into the lungs as the disease progresses. The airways basically get blocked, causing this reduction in flow.

There are different symptoms for COPD. The most common of them are dyspnea, or shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent coughing, and discharge of sputum. Since these are lung-related diseases, the possibility of chest pain is not all that prominent, though there could be instances when the patient does suffer from chest pain.
